@jonklassen I read The Skull to a class of 5th graders and one of the boys asked what the original book was that you read, because he wanted to read that version now! I loved that he was inspired, can you share what the original book that the librarian found again for you?
Ooh it was great hearing you talk about this, thanks! As a quiet kind of kid I loved that liminal space that Lucy and Mr Tumnus shared, the tea and the shared umbrella and the secret cosiness, and I remember being a bit pissed off when the others discovered it too! Love The Skull.
I second what @Matt Gallagher and @Justin Goins wrote! This peek “behind the wardrobe” into your process is so informative and extremely valuable. Thank you for posting!
Yeah this was great! Fun hearing those subtle and clever solutions to focus the story and empty/satisfy the George Saunders - things I couldn't help noticing cart. Just watched Nightmare Before Christmas for the first time in awhile and that cool forest with the holiday doors is very similar to Beauty and Beast. No one's ever seen before, takes Jack all night to get there, and then those dang oogie boogie kids get there in like 2 seconds.
Jon, thank you for your two posts this week. They deepened my appreciation for your work (if that’s even possible) by shedding light on how you craft specific ideas, emotions, and perceptions. As a reader, I often overlook the thought and intention behind my feelings and my kids' reactions to a story. It's clear that each narrative is shaped by your deliberate choices, and it’s fascinating to think about how different decisions could have led to entirely different outcomes.
If you are ever doing a masterclass on visual storytelling - count me in
