Thanks for this, Jon! It's always such a pleasure listening to you talk about your books, the story behind the story, and your choices in the creation process.
Loved hearing you talk about how design and process choices can make you braver, free you up, create more ease in the work. Feeling my way through a very similar process at the moment.
I can totally relate to having to think things through almost completely before committing them to paper. Anyway, not a sketchbook person (ha!) And the idea that initially working heavily in midtones can then free you up to make a handful of smaller moves that make a big impact 💀👌
Love this. My daughter- a resident physician in Atlanta- keeps your books on her coffee table and, after a bad day/night, she can pick up 'I We Found a Hat' and feel it calming her. Words can't describe how special that is. As an illustrator, I hope you especially appreciate that your work is helping her in helping her patients.
Thanks for the great post today - I can see your family through your verbal 'illustration'.
Very happy to see this today Jon. My favorite book last year too.
The moment before, or the moment after what’s in the text are the best moments.

This is fantastic! But we are all still wondering, will you be wearing a Gorilla costume for halloween (sans mask)??
This was a great listen / watch , thank you . I love to listen to stuff whilst drawing so video works great .
I love the skull too . I like the tip about not having to match the pictures to the words exactly , I’m going to try that . Thank you
